Gloria Klein: Crisis Management opened at Anat Ebgi gallery’s Tribeca location on January 9th. Gloria Klein was a queer feminist artist whose works explore repetition and systematic order through overlapping diagonal hatch marks, informed by mathematical systems. Born and raised in Brooklyn, Klein studied at The City University of New York: Brooklyn College, before studying at the Brooklyn Museum Art School and the Art Students League of New York.

The human mind is miraculous, but fallible. The anxious acrylic arrangements of late New York-based painter Gloria Klein evoke its glitches. Beneath their superficial frenzies, however, lie methodical mathematical systems—manifestations of Klein’s obsessive nature. These patterns are prone to failures of their own. They also epitomize art-making as an act of self-exploration.

The Minimalists may have worked with mind-boggling precision, but Gloria Klein took their exactitude to the next level with her abstractions, which she produced by painting according to predetermined mathematical systems. Fractal Geometry (1987), one of the electrically colored canvases in this show, depicts a succession of squares within squares, each marked out using clashing lines and hues.

Anat Ebgi is pleased to announce Crisis Management, an exhibition of paintings by American artist Gloria Klein. This is Klein’s first solo exhibition with the gallery in New York. On view at 372 Broadway in Tribeca from January 9 through February 28, with an opening reception on Friday, January 9 from 6-8pm.
